Being A Stay At Home Mom And Starting A Small Business

Posted by admin | Uncategorized | Wednesday 10 March 2010 8:44 pm

So many more people these days are working from home. It used to be that only highly specialized professionals like doctors or lawyers had home offices but in the last ten years the internet has tremendously increased the ability to work at home. Now, with the addition of a struggling economy, concerns about conserving fuel and massive layoffs occurring in many large companies, people from all walks of life are jumping on the work from home bandwagon.

The effects and aftermath of all the corporate downsizing haven’t been the only impetus for moms to decide that home business is the way to go. Inspired by the many so-called mom-preneurs that are making financial successes of their hobbies and home-making skills, women have been deciding to focus more on what fuels them emotionally and they’ve begun to attend seminars and buy thousands of dollars worth of books, CD’s and other products that help them to identify the best route to leaving a corporate paycheck and doing more personally satisfying work as small business owners and entrepreneurs.

So, what kind of business does a stay-at-home mom start? The choices are quite varied. But for the best chance at success, it’s probably better to choose something related to an interest you already have, rather than something that just seems like a good idea because everybody else seems to be making money with it.

But that being said, direct-selling is a popular option for home-businesses among stay-at-home moms. It can be actual products or guides on how to find fashion jewelry wholesale, for instance. Another direct-selling trend that is gaining in popularity involves home parties such as Pampered Chef that sells cooking supplies or passion Parties which specializes in adult toys and books.

A lot of moms also choose to start a blog. Mom bloggers, as they are often called, earn money by selling much coveted advertising space on their blogs. The can also make money by selling products from which they will get a percentage of each sale.

The blogs are usually about the everyday challenges of motherhood, raising a family, balancing a budget, etc. Some of them are very simple narratives about mundane things such as a trip to Target to get a super-sized bottle of Kirkland glucosamine pills for an elderly parent who’s now living with the family.

Many women are also starting to create ebooks that detail such things as how to make home-made xmas ornaments or the pros and cons of homeschooling your kids. The topics of these ebooks can be just about anything as long as it appeals to a large segment of ebook readers, most of whom have hopefully been following your blog.
